Everybody hates acne and everybody gets acne. It’s such a fact of life that companies make millions every year marketing and selling treatments for this pain in the… face, and back, and butt (no, literally).
The first thing you need to realize is that everybody goes through this and you are not the only one. With that out of the way, let’s go over some of the ways to get rid of acne once and for all!
Diet and Exercise
Believe it or not, exercising regularly, drinking lots of water, getting enough sleep and eating a healthy, balanced diet and go a long way toward getting clearer skin. Your skin is an organ. What goes on inside is shown on the outside, and your inner health is reflected by your outer health. Take in whole grains, lots of veggies, fruits and lean meats; drink lots of water and be sure to cook with healthy oils (like olive oil).
Greasy, oily foods and sweets don’t actually cause acne, by the way, there’s no actual scientific evidence to prove that – it’s just people saying, “Well, I ate this, and suddenly I have acne!” without actually realizing that there are other factors that play that may actually be the problem.
Wash regularly, but not too frequently
Washing your face is important. Use a gentle cleanser – not the harsh antibacterial soaps that are often pushed – and a soft cloth or sponge. If you wash once in the morning to get rid of sweat and other things that develop overnight, and once at night before bed to get rid of all the crap that builds up during the day, you’re good to go.
Too much scrubbing, water that’s too hot, products that are too harsh – all of those can be factors in making your skin worse, so be careful and just stick to the basics. All you need are a mild cleanser and a soft cloth or sponge.
Just say “no” to popping, and prodding, and smoking, and…
Too much unprotected exposure to the sun, smoking, and drinking super-sugary or high-in-caffeine beverages can help offset your body’s balance and make acne a possibility, so cut down on that stuff or eliminate it altogether. Another thing you need to not do? Poke and prod at your skin. Prodding and popping can spread acne bacteria, push it deeper into the skin and lead to scarring.
So keep your hands to yourself. Drink more water! Put those cigarettes down! Have you thought of switching to decaf?
Your Dermatologist is your friend
If your acne is severe, you’re going to need help. Get a recommendation for a skin doctor and follow their advice. They might give you a prescription for something, or advice that you never thought about before. How do you know if your acne is severe? Well, if over-the-counter treatments and general advice like in this article don’t work, plus, if your face is covered in cysts, your acne is severe.
Be positive – Everybody has acne at some point in their lives, it’s not the end of the world. It’s normal. Be positive, don’t stress. It’s okay!
